A reader writes in response to the F**king Monday column on why groups or identities have become sacred to both the left and right:
Here’s a difficult truth: we can’t couch complaints about the erosion of discourse as if it were a moral failing. The bare fact is that the right insists on alternative facts that are simply not real. It is not possible to constructively converse with people who willingly inhabit a fantastical reality dictated by a sociopathic liar. I work with these people every day, there’s no common frame of reference anymore.
Not even that fascism is a bad thing.
This comment touches on the very reason why I started writing about politics some 20 years ago. There is a lot of truth to it, but over time I’ve come to understand that it isn’t as one sided as I might have previously thought.
