Good News For The Democrats And A Rare Opportunity To Change Democracy

Suddenly, the midterms don't look so dire for the Democrats. Here's why.

WASHINGTON, DC – I’ll preface this entire piece with my usual warning: don’t get happy. There are significant obstacles in the path for Democrats in this year’s midterms and we’ll have to work extra-hard to remain afloat. However, it’s looking more and more likely that partisan gerrymandering by Republican legislatures won’t necessarily be one of those obstacles.

For the past couple of years, it was practically a given that Republicans would wrangle enough gerrymandered districts to win a House majority through hinky redistricting alone. In other words, if every member remained in place, without losing any seats in the election, the gains the Republicans would make, and therefore the seats the Democrats would lose, would crowbar the Republicans into a majority through that process alone.

As I’ve been saying recently: the crazier the Republicans get, the more voter suppression and gerrymandering they require in order to win.

But here’s the good news by way of a rare “both sides do it” story…
