Gamergate ruined video games for decent people. Here's how I reclaimed my inner geek without giving in to the hate.

I love video games. A lot. Like, really, really love them. Unlike these little whippersnappers who think video games started with Pokémon, I’ve been gaming since the Atari 2600 back in the 1970s and I’ve played almost every system ever released in the United States at some point. Also, I played the hell out of Pokémon Yellow. Pikachu forever, bitches!

I like video games so much that I worked as a game tester for a year. It wasn’t a very good company (OK, it was Acclaim and they were awful), but I was literally paid to play video games. The Crow: City of Angels is one of the worst games ever made but, hey, the job was still fun and it was fascinating watching even a shitty game being built.

After that, I went to work at Electronics Boutique (which later merged with Gamestop) because, well, they sold video games. You do what you love, right? I worked there for about ten years before Deb and I decided to have kids and I became a stay at home parent while also working part …
