WASHINGTON, DC – What happened in Kansas this week is, to quote Joe Biden, a big fucking deal. By a staggering margin, a ballot initiative to repeal an amendment in the state constitution protecting abortion rights failed to pass. Put another way: 64 percent of Kansas voters, as of this writing, chose to keep abortion rights enshrined in the state’s constitution.

Not only is Kansas a colossal bellwether for what could happen in November due to the Republican-slash-Supreme Court zeal to overturn Roe v Wade and Planned Parenthood v Casey, but it’s also a potential model for how Americans who support reproductive rights might be able to successfully circumvent red state legislatures.
