WASHINGTON, DC – Caught in the constant undertow of the Donald Trump tsunami, it’s easy to lose touch with qualities we ought to prioritize in our political leadership. It’s understandable given decades of misguided hack punditry and horserace election coverage that too often misleads us into believing that whoever had the most recent zinger or who “won the week” are appropriate touchstones for determining who should control the world’s most powerful economy and military.

This is why I often find myself making a case for us to reacquaint ourselves with the vitally important character traits of competence, stability, and expertise.

The news media, the Republican Party, and eventually Donald himself have collectively spent many years and billions of dollars convincing us these qualities are pointless, if not completely undesirable metrics for leadership.
