Growing up, I remember openly laughing at the absurd pronouncements of Soviet officials and the articles in Pravda. Little did I know that decades later, we’d see the same thing here, only now it’s called the Republican Party and Fox News.

“or will they too bend to his formidable will?”

I don’t think Trump has much will.

Privilege, entitlement, both leading to a not unjustified sense that he can do whatever he wants.

But perseverance? Determination? Keeping going when things are hard? I don’t see him having any of those qualities.

To the extent he’s continuing to persist despite the overwhelming evidence against him is due to his belief in his privilege and that things will eventually go his way (because he’s a white male and they have to) rather than any determined intention to persevere despite the odds.

I'm completely flummoxed that TV news operations are essentially handed most of their content for free by citing print media sources for investigative journalism. Why not have these massive ad revenue earners pay a licensing fee for the content they cite and the reporters they have on as almost daily guests? It seems that would solve the revenue gap at many prestigious outlets. I pay for digital subscriptions to three outlets: NYT, WaPo, and the Banter. Not to mention whatever Dish-TV carriage fee MSNBC gets. With the demise of Pitchfork and SI this week, I can envision budgeting some money for some reputable music and cultural journalism. I gave Rolling Stone another shot in 2023 after cancelling my longstanding print subscription (1982-2015). The print edition was absolute garbage and its gotten even worse post Jann Wenner. At peak, I also subscribed to Details, Blender, Spin, Interview, Men's Health, Rolling Stone, and the Chicago Sun-Times and heavily consumed freebies like Chicago Reader and Illinois Entertainer. Perhaps more reputable journalists will follow the Banter's lead and start something new to bring truth to a post-truth world. I'd pony up for that and perhaps cancel a few streaming subscriptions.
