As this tragedy unfolds, taking countless innocent Israeli and Palestinian civilian lives at every turn, I can't stop thinking about the parallels to George W. Bush and Donald Trump. As we recall, W won the electoral college by only a few hundred votes in Florida, and was facing widespread protest his first year in office. He ignored an intelligence report stating that terrorists were likely to attack US targets with planes. And when 9/11 happened, he used it as a way to cement his strongman regime, silence all opposition (like the Dixie Chicks) and plunge the nation into a long war. Trump tried to do the same thing with Iran but thankfully failed. And now, in a matter of hours, Netanyahu went from facing massive civilian protests of his fascist regime and dismantling of Israel's court system to having the whole country on lockdown while plunging into a long war. The media speculates about an unprecedented intelligence failure, but I would not doubt once the smoke clears, it turns out he ignored intelligence reports of an impending attack. Now, Israelis are united are all against an external enemy that was let in the door rather than dissenting against their own sham leaders. The civilians of Palestine deserve to live in a safe, secure and politically recognized state as much as the citizens of Israel do. And as you've stated, both sides now seem committed to the genocide of the other. Terror only escalates. Look no further than Iraq, where the nation's youth still lose their lives fighting 1000 year old grievances, or America, where the Civil War continues to be fought (right now in the media and politics, but probably soon, in blood).

So true Ben. Wonder what others in The Banter community think. Saddened but not surprised to see anti-Semitic hate crime again coming to the fore in the UK (not that it has ever gone away). Some news sites even cowardly describe Hamas as militants. They are a terrorist group!

Interestingly I just finished reading an article about how many Israeli flags are being flown in Britain, a quarter of the cabinet is well supported by Jewish lobbying groups, and the deaths of Gaza civilians is not getting anything like the media coverage of deaths of Israeli children.

Not being in the UK at the moment I can’t see for myself what’s what. But I note the stark difference in descriptions of which side is being attacked/ignored.

What Hamas did was wrong yes, Israel has a right to defend theirselves. When will the Palestinians get any right’s they are nearly pushed into the ocean. Can’t work because most of the jobs are inside Israel. Most of the young people know what Israel is doing is wrong when will the world see. South Africa happening all over again. What would happen if the Palestine people cut off water to Israel I can hear the condemnation from the US and the world. Remember Yitzhak Rabin the fifth prime minister was killed by their own.

Please consider checking out Jewish Voice for Peace, or Mondoweiss.net. What happened to Israel last week was horrific. The mainstream coverage continues to be one sided. So many are Progressive except for Palestine. Israel is operating as an apartheid nation. Amnesty International's analysis in Feb. 2022 concluded Israel's apartheid against Palestinians was a cruel system of domination and a crime against humanity. Also, last year a United Nations independent human rights expert said, "apartheid is being practiced by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory."

Look at the map of Israel in 1947 vs the map of Israel today. How can people be so blind? Stating the obvious does not mean I am condoning violence. Again, please consider joining or following Jewish Voice for Peace. They are modern day heroes.

“This analogy falls apart for a number of reasons. Firstly, Hamas crossed the border into Israel to launch its attack, and secondly, the Ukrainians aren’t deliberately murdering Russian civilians or taking children and disabled people hostage.”

The Hamas:Ukraine analogy may be weak but the Israel:Russia one is apt. By cutting off “all electricity, all fuel, all food” to Gaza Israel is taking the entire civilian population of Gaza (47% of which are children) hostage.

“Another point: it is popular to paint Hamas as a resistance movement, but this is no longer the case. Like many resistant movements before it, Hamas has morphed into an extremist terrorist organization.”

Another point: it is popular to paint Israel as merely defending itself, but this has not been the case for some time. Like many occupiers before it, Israel has morphed into an extremist state that punishes broad civilian populations.

Israel is going win the battle and lose the war. Situation is more like Northern Ireland and South Africa, the conditions will spawn another Hamas or something worse. After wiping out all of these bastards, Israel will have to either get out of the West Bank or give the Palestinians the same rights as other Arabs in Israel. Currently they don't have a stake in peace. It is why the US never a serious terrorist movement, the Civil Rights took the pressure off. Revolutions start because people have had enough and death has lost its sting.
