Point #1 above basically proves Netanyahu allowed Oct 7th to happen. If Mossad is THAT good, how is it remotely plausible that several thousand well trained and well-equipped HAMAS fighters assembled in Gaza without anyone noticing? It was Bibi's Reichstag fire.
Yes it was a Blitzkrieg but Iran rallied. I don't know when you wrote this but over the day, patience with Israel has become more and more drawn out - France shut down Israel's Expo display at its arms fair; the UK although sending jets to support Israel (FFS!) has reiterated the call for deescalation and the former UK Ambassador to Iran and the UK Iranian Ambassador have both come out and said the attack was illegal. This is now the headline in all media except the most right leaning. Typical of the UK - say one thing in public and another in the press - with the press being the best barometer of how the Government really feels.
The world is NOT on Israel's side any more. It is become a pariah state and even its few allies such as the US are not able to back it in the way Netanyahu expects (due to Trump's visibly declining health).
So you blame Trump, but you also write all of this:
It is in many ways understandable that Israel has taken matters into its own hands. Not only has Iran vowed to “wipe Israel off the map”, they have backed anti-Israeli groups like Hezbollah with weapons, funding, and training, have deployed IRGC forces and Shiite militias to support the Assad regime in Syria, and they have supplied funds, weapons, and technology to Hamas.
"It is possible for two opposite things to be true at the same time"
Iran's theocratic regime is despotic. BUT they have no intention at the current time of pursuing nuclear weapons. IF Israel pushes them though, this may all change. If that happens, then yes, WWIII is very likely. So Ben is quite right.
“The Israeli attacks of the past few days certainly weren’t in response to a sudden escalation in the nuclear threat from Iran. The Islamic Republic is not significantly nearer to nuclear weapons capability than it was six months ago.”
Israel doesn’t care about the massacre of hundreds of thousands in Gaza. It will never be ‘hundreds of thousands’ of Israelis dead, stop being hyperbolic. Israel would wipe out the entire middle East before it allowed that to happen.
Wow… thats an aggressive response HP. That is not, in fact, what the evidence says? Multiple inspections by IAEA and the country’s own constitution say so. But I guess thats the problem with propaganda. Its easier to believe a story than facts. Now, is Iran an appallingly misogynistic despotic autocratic society? Why yes it is. But given what has happened in the USA, I don’t think democracy is all that great for a society like Iran either right now.

So which is it?
Both.

Iran has always intended to develop nukes with the expressly started purpose of using them on Israel.
I do not expect that you care at all about that, or the hundreds of thousands of dead Israelis that would result.

Why should it be only one of those?
It's not. Both countries are up to their armpits in blood.
