I had a similar conversation with my son, and it ended a very similar way.

To quote the modern classic Forrest Gump, "Mama said that the Forrest part was to remind me that sometimes we all do things that, well, just don't make no sense."

One political hypothetical I often wonder about is what would be Kings legacy had he not been killed

He would have been alive through the 80s Reagan era and 90s Clinton era at a minimum you would think, so after being more vocally opposed to Vietnam he probably would have spoken out against Reaganomics, does he run instead of Jackson in 84 or 88? What does he say about the 90s crime bill? What does he say as crack hits the inner cities, if he survives to the aughts he obviously opposes the Iraq War but what is his reaction to 9/11

All of these issues basically guarantee that there is no way he has his current status as a secular saint so what is he seen as? What is his reputation? Who, if anyone, fills the role he currently fills in the nations mythology? If not King who fills his role as the saintly opponent of segregation that taught a nation where it went wrong? How is the ‘I have a Dream’ speech seen if it’s now one delivered by a man who later became remembered as a partisan figure (if that happened)

These are all fascinating questions to consider and I’ll be buggered if I have the faintest idea what the answer is to any of them

People insist on seeing things in black and white. Seeing things in Brown and pink makes it harder to be racist.

I love the conversation you had with your son. Racism really doesn't make any sense.

Racism is learned. Kids don't understand it.

The reason big-deal Republican donors like Nikki is because they think she could siphon off those white suburban anti-TFG women. And she could, which is why I'm a little nervous about the possibility. On the other hand, however, the likelihood that TFG will accept that, and support her, is pretty close to zero. He would, I expect, probably run as an independent or 3d-party; and in a Biden-Haley-TFG election, Biden wins easily. It would be 1992 all over again, except more so. The reaction of the insane end of MAGA might be nasty, though.

I appreciated the King/Hughes quotes. I wasn’t aware of any of them. 🤔😉😊

Plus, Haley is a woman. Even Democrats found it too hard to overcome their misogyny. Impossible for Republicans.
