"I'm a wealthy, white, heterosexual, male. That means I'm getting victimized four times over!"
And they believe it, too.
When the actual fact is they are losing nothing. It's that others are getting what they've had to themselves for so long. We saw this with all the protests against gays getting "special rights" when the only demand was getting *exactly the same rights* that straight people already had.
Sure. They're losing being above others and they see that as somehow being reduced. But it remains a childish and nonsensical "loss". It's the same nonsensical, baseless argument they make against gay marriage: that somehow it ruins the "sanctity" of their own marriage when it does nothing of the sort.
You make X dollars a year. Your neighbor makes less. Then your neighbor gets a raise and they also now also make X dollars a year. Your income is totally unaffected by that, yet somehow them also making X means you've lost income? Crazy.
There are two principal interpretations of “free speech“.
One, that I call the “Bill Maher interpretation“, is, as Justin describes, the assertion that you can say whatever you want without fear of any kind of consequences. This position is not as alien as it sounds at first. The late Justice Hugo Black was a First Amendment absolutist, and contended that libel and slander laws were unconstitutional. (Note, btw, that TFG wants to make libel and slander laws stronger.)
The other one I call the “Lenny Bruce interpretation“. For Lenny, it was all about “prior restraint“. As he put it, the First Amendment says “you get to say it one time”. That there may be consequences is not a consideration.
When they are held responsible for their hate speech, they play the victim calling it “cancel culture.”
You see it all the time in Hollywood: When a bigot actor gets exposed and they lose their job, suddenly the alt right goes in fight-mode. Private companies can choose who works for them or who does not on their own terms according to the laws of equal employment. If they feel it’s discrimination to fire someone over bigoted comments, check the fine print in their contracts. Same goes for those who felt that it wasn’t fair their employer required them to get a Covid vaccine to continue employment. “Ma rights.” Yes, they had a right to secure employment elsewhere, but instead, they whined like babies.
No. When you engage in hate speech or public endangerment, you are the bully, not the victim.
Trump's gift to the US (one that likely will never be received) is that he's poked holes into and exposed all of our weakest links. That Presidential pardons can be used on yourself and anyone committing a crime on your behalf. That the elector college can be manipulated for minority rule -- and how a few thousand voters in a handful of states can determine the ruler of the free world. That with enough money for lawyers and endless appeals, you truly can get away with any crime. That with enough rabid followers, there is no scandal too outrageous or low to end a political career. That voting maps can be manipulated without consequence. That political speech can lie til the cows come home without being regulated. Will we amend our constitution or perhaps adopt a new constitution for the modern age? Unlikely. And hence, the American Experiment ends and we essentially become the autocratic empire from which we once rebelled. Given enough sequels, I bet even the Jedi become tyrants.
You are right, but I have faith in the judicial branch. I believe SCOTUS will come down resoundingly against immunity for the president. I read it here and there, but there is almost no chance they would allow self-pardon. With either, they relinquish part of their duty as a coequal government branch. It is simply too much power, and most of these nine get what is at stake. I also believe, just as they did with gerrymandering, that they will not overturn the 14th Amendment cases. They're going to leave that to the States, which could get interesting.
Or I'm wrong, and we are just screwed. Not the 14A stuff, but the immunity and pardon oneself ”issues.” They are patently absurd. If they find some Originalist fudder-dudder drivel to support such a decision, my mind will melt. I will have to move to the Congo or Uzbekistan where they value democracy a little more.

Those three at least aren't new from Trump. The electoral college has always been an anti-democratic institution giving a small number of voters (who are very much NOT a cross-section of the country) a hugely outsized influence on national elections. And there has always been a largely consequence-free legal system for the wealthy.
(And you mean the Jedi weren't authoritarian tyrants at some point?)
I Am Neither Pro Israel nor Pro Palestine...What I Am is Anti-Bombing of Fenced-In People! Had I been Fenced In in Gaza when the Bombs started Falling from the Sky...I would have been Killed Trying to Bring The Fences Down! At Least I would have Met My Maker Knowing I Had Tried To Do Good.
"What they really want is freedom from consequence of their hate speech."
As his psychological profile reveals, same goes for tech bro "free speech absolutists" like Elon.
Touché!

To bigoted white people, others having the same rights IS losing something. They're no longer special and privileged and they hate that.

It's always "Ma rights!" but no one else's rights ever matter. Funny how that works...
