Here’s an idea: Currently, Social Security taxes are only imposed on the first ≈$160,000/year of income. Eliminate that cap. Take Social Security tax on all earned income. (Note that this still exempts unearned income.)
Social Security problems fixed. You’re welcome. 🤔😉😊
NO NO NO that won't solve the problem because the top 10% are already paying 150% of the taxes. Trying to get more money from the people who have all the money won't work we have to get the money from the bottom 50% who have 10% of the money that's who needs to pay more in taxes. Everyone has to tighten their belts on these austerity budgets! This even applies to entitlements like SS and Medicare/Medicaid. KEEP YOUR DAMN FILTHY GOVERNMENT HANDS OFF MY SOCIAL SECURITY! (This is an actual quote made to Barney Frank in a public setting)
Social Security was created back when senior citizens were so destitute that they were eating cat food. Perhaps that’s better than being “dependent on the government??” Rich people always come up with some excuse to rip away the social safety net.
If high income people paid more into the Social Security trust fund than they currently do it would be solvent for decades to come. Why isn’t everyone required to pay the same percentage of income into SS? Why is there even a cutoff? Was that a carve-out for rich people who wouldn’t need the retirement income? Supposedly? You never know what the future will bring, even for the wealthy.
Sure they can and I’m sure most of them do. My grandmother didn’t need the miney but she still collected it. She said she’d give it to her grandchildren, but when she became senile her husband kept it all in her checking account, which was separate from his. He then doled it out as he saw fit, mostly to his grandchildren, not me and my sister, who are the children of my grandmother’s first child with her first husband, my grandfather.
But there is a cap on income for people who contribute. If they make over $168,600 they pay no further money into the SS trust fund. The government should raise that ceiling or do away with it entirely. If they did that, the trust fund would continue to support all beneficiaries for a very long time.
Could the discussion about the issues with SS fund be presented in a different way since the fund itself isn't the problem, it is how it is managed that is the problem. No one really talks about why there will be a short fall. Why isn't there repeated discussion about how the invested funds from SS intake is being borrowed repeatedly(which the government wasn't able to do before Bush's congress rewrote the bill) to fund the military in cases of war if more money was needed and congress keeps pushing off repaying the trust fund. They don't want to pay OUR money back so the funds not being replenished is the issue. Like if you keep taking loans from your ongoing 401K and don't pay it back, you never make your money back to get when you retire....and I agree with no cap on earnings!
Senator Mike Lee is one of the team of Putin's nuclear terrorist (others are David Sacks, Don Junior, Elon Musk, Donald Trump joined them in September 2024, may other lower level profile, mostly MAGA-MARXists.) But Mike Lee has been spreading and amplifying Moscow's nuclear bluff twice a month in 2022, and ever month in 2023. Only David Sacks, the future US Minister of Truth and Miracles (social networks, media, crypto) did so more than Mike Lee -- David was acting as the nuclear threats every week.
So now Mike Lee moved from being a nuclear terrorist to a historian?
P.S. Unlike Musk, Mike Lee and David Sacks perfectly knew that Putin would never use nukes, but still did it. Why? To stop or reduce real aid for Ukraine, and we must admit that they succeeded -- the US government delivered less than half of what they promised in 2022.
There is a very real question as to whether Putin actually has useable nukes. Nukes require expensive maintenance to continue to work and the isotopes cease being useable as a weapon after 20 years or so.
No, it's a secondary or lower question. There has never been a moment that Putin considered to use nukes against a western country, not in a case of Crimea liberation, not even when parts of Russia proper were taken. That's never been an option for Moscow, for many reasons, two of which are that Russian oligarchs, mafia and generals hide $2400-3000 bn in assets and their families in Western countries since 1990. It's always been a bluff, which only works when it's a blackmail.
Curbing benefits with social security or Medicare are harder to implement but Medicaid is a goner
72m Americans rely on Medicaid to get basic healthcare, but they are not organised and lot are minority - black and Latino. They will be painted as undeserving whereas Medicare recipients paid into payroll taxes. Medicaid costs around $900B and initially this will be shifted to the States entirely then defunded almost entirely.
Now we see the consequences of losing. The “ groups “ that sold open borders , defund the police , identity politics etc have yo look at every person who loses their healthcare and apologize for letting them down

Elon Musk is not paying it, just like any other oligarchs -- they don't pay taxes.

Rich people can still draw social security if they have paid into it though…

Stop referring to Social Security as an entitlement. It is an earned benefit. Eliminate the "cap" and the problem is solved.
