“That will make the economy worse, and that’s not what we signed up for.” Yes, yes it was, all the warning signs were out there, you just chose to ignore them.

And yet, when asked if they would vote for Trump again, I guarantee, the majority will say yes! Irony, at its finest!…:)

They claim they were better off when trump was in office! Interestingly, the ones I talked to couldn't name a single thing that made them better off. Go figure.

Expand full comment

Exactly! It’s a cult! Although, some will say inflation was down, even though Trump inherited a robust economy; before he blew it!…:)

He was good at taking credit for the improving economy Obama passed on to him.

Expand full comment

Exactly. He got kicked out after one term. What did they expect would be different this time around? Besides worse.

As the late HL Mencken once said:

“Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it: good and hard.”

Never more prescient words!…:)

Democracy takes work. Too many Americans didn’t take the job seriously.

Bottom line.

I think most are just not willing to admit their prejudice and/or hate, and the rest are hoping for the End Times, believing that they're the chosen ones. I've even heard some say, "Oh, we KNOW he's the Antichrist, but that means jesus is coming!"

I wish Jesus would hurry up and take them so we can move forward as a society.

As a Christian, I could not, and did not, vote for trump, although I believe that several Christians did vote for him, in the hope that it would speed up the End Times. I believe that trump was never God's man, or His plan, but that this was a test for American voters; and I am convinced that we failed the test miserably.

I’m struck by what he said immediately before that - “I don’t like the turbulence. I don’t like the chaos in the market,”

See, that’s not true. One thing that EVERYONE knew was that a Trump presidency meant turbulence. The truth is that the Trump voters somehow deluded themselves that the turbulence would only affect the folks that they hate.

Most of the trump supporters I know, don't really have any goals or aspirations to better their economic position, even if they could afford it. Higher education is something they frown on, too. The poor get poorer, and the middle class shrinks. Like they say, many of us are one health emergency away from bankruptcy, and the majority of Americans couldn't come up with $1000 if they needed it.

I think 45’s voters are going to have to experience the real pain of his stupid policies. He is about to ruin an economy that had real possibilities for more than the billionaires. I fear for those people who will be collateral damage caused by greed and stupidity.

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” ― Carl Sagan

We need to keep emphasizing that this is a war between billionaires and the rest of us, which includes Trumpers.

If they can grasp that, we'll be in a better position to defeat the oligarchs.

I don't think we can be saved. Donald Trump doesn't give a flying fu** about his supporters. He used them for his own ends. All the screaming and protesting will mean absolutely nothing when the 'vote' is taken away from us. I am so sad for my country. It sickens me to see what is happening. I wish I could have a more positive outlook on all of this.

Expand full comment

It’s not just Donald Trump. The entire GOP. All these years of chest beating and patriotism. They never meant any of it.

Well, as long as you don’t just give up.

Never.

Expand full comment

Ah, well. You can see how “I don’t think we can be saved.” might come across as surrender. Hard to see it another way.

I absolutely get the frustration and anger and even a feeling of helplessness. But we need to make sure we use those first to the *never* give in to the last one.

“I’m frustrated and scared.”? Sure. But “It’s hopeless.”? Never.

Expand full comment

I don't think that what we know as The United States can be saved. Maybe that's hopeless in the sense that, ironically, we are not going back. A new US will have to emerge. I don't know that I'll live to see it.

Well, you don't mind if we try, do you? Meanwhile, it'd be appreciated if you'd just stand off to the sidelines, quietly. Doomsaying won't help as the rest of us make the effort.

What exactly are you trying? I'm all in, but I haven't heard of anything remotely effective that can be done right now. Just alot of circle jerk nonsense and protesting. I've done all that, it doesn't work. If someone has a real plan they better come forward now.

Maybe. If they ever realize that migrants, trans people and DEI are not the things that are making them unhappy.

Wages that don’t keep up with consumer prices, tax cuts that are bankrupting the country and the high cost of healthcare due to insufficient insurance coverage are what’s really hurting them.

But decades of propaganda has them fooled.

We warned these rubes; it would end like Brexit; with buyers remorse on CRACK! I have a Haitian (dog park) friend (not someone eating cats and dogs), who has legal proactive status!

He said, that his entire community was voting for Trump because he’s better on Immigration; and he’ll only deport the criminals. Plus he’s a great businessman and will bring down inflation. I told him that Biden prioritized criminals, and that presidents have little control over inflation, unless they create it themselves; like with “no reason” tariffs on our allies. He just shrugged his shoulders and said that Trump is smart, there must be a reason.

Now he’s scared shitless. I didn’t bother with I told you so, I just responded, you getting the government you wanted: good and hard! Don’t say you weren’t warned!

Oh, and by the way, the average price of eggs was $4.10 when Biden left office; they are now averaging $650 a dozen. So much for ending inflation on Day 1!

They think Trump is SMART?!

HOW?!

Com’on silly, he’s a reality tv billionaire. He’s a genius, by any other name. And we know this, because he keeps telling us everyday; over and over again, ad nauseam!

Bottom line: when you gaslight people often enough, they start to believe it’s true. And if you can turn a bunch of angry, violent insurrectionists into heroes and hostages, then anything is possible! Good times!…:)

I agree with everyone-no simple answers why Americans voted for the rapey felon but primarily I believe it was because of deep seated racism and misogyny. Couched in lies/ propaganda from right wing media for decades has saturated voters brains to the point of disabling critical thinking. So I think we , as a country, will go through hell and back resembling the Great Depression and the civil war combined. Unless the courts hold up the rapey felon enough to get some actual blowback legally as well as public opinion changing against this maladministration I worry that we are heading for a broken isolated country.

I wish I could be as “optimistic “ as the author but we are in the midst of a virtual coup. Trump will install an entire federal government loyal not to the constitution but to Trump. By the time he’s done in 4 years it won’t matter if it’s Trump or anyone else serving as president because it will take a generation to undo the destruction caused by this administration both domestically and internationally.

I can’t recall ever learning in school about what causes people to turn to fascist nationalism as an answer not how historic fascist leaders were able to turn the working class against the marginalized to keep them from placing blame on their actual oppressors.

We did learn that socialism was bad.
