He's not unknown to the Republican Party's biggest sponsor (by far) and is more radical and reactionary than Trump without the criminal baggage. Koch continued to operatate his three side businesses in Russia well into their invasion of Ukraine and only relinqueshed his ownerhip after the Biden Admin made it impossible for him to continue benefitting from Russia's lax, if any environmental regulations and labor laws. Only the future will reveal if Koch actually did relinquish his interests. My guess is Putin will decide to reinstate Koch's ownership docs.
Johnson is a significant coup for Koch. Just as Trump built on a Koch foundation, Koch can build on Trumpism, with much more competence and cash, including a more reliable partner in Moscow. Koch is already involved in the U.S. Presidential race with several candidates he has purchased and indoctrinated - DeSantis, Haley, and possibly Youngkin, and is well-represented in the Senate. Another candidate Koch owned was Pence, who made room for DeSantis and Haley.
