Although Musk, Russia, the media, and the coordinated voter suppression campaign of the southern, GOP-controlled states certainly were certainly culpable, I cannot help but believe that the undercurrent of misogyny and racism in this country are not even greater explanations for the end of democracy.

I guess people like you, unable to empathize and only to insult are the reason the election turned out the way it did. Not sure what it would have cost you to respond “I understand,” and leave it at that. I’m sure you have another insult ready to go but I’m disengaging.

People like me were tired of people like you screaming about how were Nazis because we thought Harris was a bad candidate.

That’s it.

We didn’t scream that people like you were Nazis because we’re upset with your assessment of Harris; we scream that you’re Nazis because you and Trump talk like Nazis and behave like Nazis and espouse autocratic policies like Nazis.

The difference between Maghats and everybody else is everybody else has empathy, while Maghats have none. It explains their comments on internet message boards and it explains their votes on election day.

Everyone: download the Self-Liberation Toolkit while you still can

https://www.aeinstein.org/self-liberation-toolkit

It is a series of guides, used successfully in other countries, to nonviolently resist authoritarianism and to restore democracy.

Fascism consolidates power quickly. There may not be a lot of time after January 20th to obtain these guides.

Numb. Just… numb.

I suppose it’s shock. I expect in the morning, after I’m sure a largely unrestful sleep, the reality will settle in along with the fear of what’s now assured to come.

I’ve liked to tell myself, were I around in 1930s Germany, that I’d have people hidden in my attic and be sneaking them out. I never believed I’d ever live someplace where I’d have to actually live up to that. But I’m now eyeing my attic to see how I can reconfigure it.

Expand full comment

Also in the morning, with the fear of what’s now assured to come is also the resolve to fight it every step of the way.

Time to give up a lot of things and spend those resources, time, and effort on the only thing that now matters. Fighting the long (it will be long) war against fascism once again.

Expand full comment

So you are fighting the results of a free and fair election? Sounds pretty fascist to me.

I'm going with democracy and willing to work with those who I don't agree with politically and make this world a better place through cooperation.

Please point to exactly where I said I would be engaging in unlawful activities.

Or will you continue to suggest (as all good fascists do) that resisting fascism is something one should not do.

You're making it pretty clear what you stand.

Fascism died in 1945. I know it's become a real buzz word last few years like saying Trump is Hitler.

Which is funny for one whose daughter married a Jew

and who brags about his Jewish grandchildren.

Ah, so I see you decide to pass on actually backing up your words. No surprise. It's the cowardice we expect from trolls like you.

Bye bye, little troll.

Russia wins. The entirety of the Ukrainian country will be ceded to Russia. Gaza, Lebanon, all the innocent people that Benjamin Netanyahu has been killing, are about to increase, exponentially, because the new fascist could care less about their lives. Our economy is going to collapse. By this time next year, we may be experiencing a recession so devastating, it is the Depression. Don’t believe me? Check out the space nazi’s new grift in this administration. Oh, and that will be compounded by the tariffs. Since we won’t be able to provide the numbers of people that pick our crops, prepare for food shortages, and a jump in prices. Childhood diseases may come back in epidemic levels, as an anti-vaxxer is going to be in charge of HHS. Women will be dying in even larger numbers from preventable complications of pregnancy. Infant and maternal mortality will continue to skyrocket. A national abortion ban will be pushed, and pushed, and pushed. The only way to stop it is to… hmmm. Was going to say vote. Apparently, America has voted. All the previous predictions have been made. Over and over. America must be masochists, cuz they are about to go through some “things “.

I’m moving to Canada.

Congratulations

Read a book called "The Big Lie" by Danesh. Very applicable and descriptive of our times we live.

Think it's available in audiobook form too! It's a great book for those don't have time to read, or research history.

After you're finished all you have to do is research a little and verify the facts.

Easy!

Trump will have time and opportunity to make it even more true, but we are as of this morning a failed state. Our courts have failed us, our legislatures have failed us, certainly our educational system, our media, our business community. But most of all it is our citizens who have failed us. And at that point, there’s no blame to be placed anywhere because we’ve simply become who we are.

So you're gonna move back to the UK then Ben, where there's a nice sane left wing government in place?

It's mourning in America. I cannot fathom how we stooped so low and unwisely to elect a convicted felon, adjudicated sexual predator, tax fraud, and overall conman to the highest position in the land for a second time. Will we ever recover from four years under this madman? I really don't think so. We've sown our own seeds of destruction.

You’ve summed up exactly how I’m feeling

Expand full comment

I can’t help thinking what went wrong in the U.S. Election? And these are my personal thoughts on the contenders from across the pond, in no particular order of importance:

1) The Economy. Trump hammered down on ‘do you feel better after four years?’ The answer should have been yes according to this article: theguardian.com/busines…

But, ironically, the benefits seemed to have been more widely felt by the rich, “The fruits of that growth are being enjoyed disproportionately by the better off.” However, by international measures, Biden did better for the US economy than the UK and Europe.

2) Migration. Trump hammered down on the threats from immigrants, “the enemy within” and claimed Harris did nothing to control borders while she was responsible for it, but didn’t Biden put forward a Bipartisan Security Border Security Bill the republicans blocked in the Senate, twice? theguardian.com/us-news…

3) Protectionism. Trump claimed China was taking jobs away from Americans and his imposed tariffs would force companies to manufacture in the US and pay for the factories themselves. However the proposed tariffs would weaken citizens’ spending power: “Tariffs proposed by Trump (60% on imports from China and 20% tariff on imports from everywhere else) would cut imports by 37%, and lead to markedly higher prices.”

4) Misogyny. Trump overturned Roe vs Wade. And a poll suggests that republicans may be more sexist than democrats: “15 percent of Republicans and virtually no Democrats say it would be a "bad thing" to elect a female president” abcnews.go.com/538/sexi…

5) Timing. Trump had effectively four years to build his presidential campaign, did Biden wait too long to hand over the reigns to Harris giving her only a few months?

Denial is a river in Egypt(!) and the first stage in Kübler-Ross’s five stage grieving process: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance. Many Democrats may be in denial today about the outcome of the election, and, at least on the measures above, they have every reason to grieve because, aside from Timing, the articles above seem to suggest Trump was wrong. And undoubtedly angry and depressed, the stages don’t necessarily happen in order, and can be simultaneous. But, if it’s any consolation to democrats, know you were probably right, at least, on almost everything.

I thought hard about voting for Kamala. I thought about it hard, and then, changed my mind.

I was thinking high inflation, open borders, a strong fentanyl underground trade, high gasoline prices, and a thriving sex trafficking business was good for America.

But when I thought deeper about if Communism or Marxist ways of government would really work for America, I decided to change my vote from blue to red.

Let's give it time and a chance to see if I was right. In fact, lets ALL work together as Americans and try that for once in a long time.

See how that goes.
