Strong disagree. Look up what happened in 1968 when the presumptive nominee was assassinated (in June), or even ‘72 when the VP nominee was replaced. Replacing Biden will only make it worse.

And why have Tapper and Bash, arguably CNN’s best people, if they weren’t going to fact-check, y’know, “moderate”? The could have used an intern if all they were going to do is ask questions.

Take the L and move on. Last night was not fatal. 🤔😉😊

I agree with you Jeff. I remember the handwringing when Obama was lackluster in his debate with Romney. I don't see the people who voted for Biden in 2020 saying gee, Biden had a terrible night, so I am going for the convicted felon who tried to overturn the election. Also, I don't see the same voters saying yes to a dictatorship. Also, I agree with Elizabeth B. Biden has time to recover. Supporters like Newsome will help despite the passive handwringers.

Last night was a disaster . How can you not see that ? His job was to convince the court of public opinion in the US that an old 82 year man had the political wit and cognitive ability to deal with Trump and be worthy of a 2nd term . He failed miserably. Awfully. Shockingly . To arrive at any other assessment is wilful neglect of what presented itself last night . I like Biden . He has compassion , conviction and belief in to do what’s right . But he’s frail old and weak and it came into full undiluted view last night. The stakes are too high to ignore this . He’s up against a vile narcissistic fascist . To go on is a dereliction of duty . Resign now and oversee an orderly process of a younger more cognitive astute communicative sharp vigorous candidate who Trump will fear . Anything less is quite frankly shameful.

Hi Danny,

Thank you for articulating what I could not. After the shocking display of Biden walking onto the stage and being unable to speak and, worse, unable to call out any of Trump’s lies, I almost vomited.

I’m angry he was allowed to take the stage, in such a frail state. Unlike you who have a decent command of our language and are extremely articulate- I’m reduced to - Fuck the DNC. F-Jamie Harrison, head of the DNC, F the machine, F - Jill Biden for letting him appear. And the last F - give us a F-ing candidate that can win.

My anger is dissipating.

He can’t win! You know it and I know it. Why don’t others! Why are people saying otherwise. He needs to resign immediately! We still have time. The Convention is in Aug. open it up, fight it out, nominate a great, younger, exciting candidate. But, they won’t. Our only hope is he starts drooling. Maybe then people will get it. Thanks for your response!

I am sorry, Ben, but I don’t agree. Yes, Biden had a craptastic night, but Gavin Newsome isn’t interested in getting on the horse midstream, and Biden has time to recover. Acknowledge the loss and keep working. And read Jeff Tiedrich’s Substack “everyone is entitled to my own opinion”

For Biden to have the last laugh on Trump is to resign with dignity and oversee the next leader in a quick orderly manner without infighting which will be the case if left to the Convention in August . The end of the road is fast approaching and decisive positive action is needed - now . Biden doesn’t have anymore time , Bidens time was last night to shift that electoral needle in his favour. Instead Trump and his team couldn’t believe their luck . A skilled younger quicker cognitive sharper candidate would have buried Trump with all his lies . This didn’t happen . It failed . Horribly and embarrassingly . Bidens Achilles heel is his age and performance in the debating arena . He did nothing to dispel that , in fact he threw a grenade under it . Biden is the problem now and he just underlined it for everyone to see . To ignore , excuse , downplay is to simply let the rot continue . For those who will swing this election perception is reality whatever Bidens record and his good character . If he refuses to go his legacy will be the man who could have passed the baton at the right moment to defeat a vengeful destructive narcissistic cruel wannabe Dictator but instead clings onto power and ignores reality of what happened on Thursday night .

The point is not whether or not Biden has my vote. Of course he does. The question is whether or not he persuaded the folks he still needed to persuade. Call them what you will: undecideds/low turnout/low information voters? Did he move the needle with them? Because we desperately need to. My vote and that of my husband and my closest friends is not in doubt. I live in Arizona, and he won so narrowly here last time, and he did it with persuadable Independents who had voted R in the past. Can Biden do it again? Last night was a big stumble. If he was so sick last night, how did he get his voice back when he spoke, briefly, at the Debate Watch party post debate and again in Raleigh today. Let’s at least be honest among ourselves about last night and what can be done going forward. We owe it to the Nation to have that honest conversation.

Watch the NC rally today. Don’t panic. It’s too early.

That's not the story making rounds though and dominating the news, social media, zeitgeist. No one but the most loyal supporters (of either party) watch rallies. Last night was the attempt to convince the skeptics, centrists, "never trumper republicans", undecided voters that Biden is fit to run.

The near unanimous consensus, by even his most fervent supporters (see Van Jones, David Axelrod, Anderson Cooper, NYT, on and on), is that he failed miserably last night. That's the shadow cast over the next 5 months barring some radical change at the convention in August.

In my opinion, last night was FATAL and if the DNC won’t give us a viable candidate, then fuck them! I was in Philadelphia in 2016 and watched “the machine” pay kids $50 to fill seats for Hillary. I knew she would lose to Trump because the young people hated her. The young people wanted Bernie and they would have swept him into office!

Fuck the DNC

Last night, Biden looked like he’d just left a nursing home. Why did “they” let him take the stage. Why? I love Biden, one of the greatest Presidents in my life time, BUT optics are everything.

Give us someone who can win. Gavin Newsom would mop the floor with Trump, Corey Booker, Gretchen Widmer - the list of younger Dem candidates is endless.

Fuck the DNC! Fuck the machine!

I will say it every day until Election Day!

I think you're jumping to conclusions. Biden is old, but he is scrappy and knowledgeable. He has proven he knows how to assemble a talented group of people for his administration and they generally follow his lead. I saw the debate, too, and it was a poor performance on Biden's part, but an even worse one for Trump (brazen lies, statements entirely divorced from reality, massive projection). Compare that debate performance to all of his other speaking. It was an outlier. Call it what it is: a bad performance. Stop being histrionic.

Jesse Piper restacked a gif that said something to the effect of, if everyone cared so much about debates Hilary would have one the presidency because she ate Trump up during every single debate. That is a fact I can get behind. Still voting for Biden.

If Biden remains in the race until the election, it's essentially a crapshoot. Replacing him now effectively hands the presidency to Trump.

I cannot in good conscience agree with you here, Ben, about Biden setting aside for another Democrat to take center stage against the narcissistic, lying, convicted felon, sexual predator of an president whose only goal in running for a second term is to dodge his legal woes and to drop charges against him if he ever is given a second chance by stupid voters. Biden does have a chance to turn his disastrous performance around in the next few months. And it's just possible that he had a bad night for whatever reason. I was just so astonished that Dump didn't melt into incoherence as he's generally done at his campaign rallies - the latest in which he descended into verbal chaos when he talked about electric boats and being eaten by sharks, or some nonsense along those lines.

Again, just to reiterate: I would vote for Biden in a coma over that Orange Turd anytime!!

Independent voter. DEEPLY dismayed at having to choose between the insurrectionist and the guy propped up with botox and animating fluids who is opposing him. If it weren't for the fact that one guy actually plotted an insurrection among so many other horrible things, I wouldn't even vote. And I was worried about Joe BEFORE the debate. I looked at him and thought... yikes - maybe folks in the opposing party are exaggerating, but not by much...

PLEASE let's get a constitutional amendment to make people over 80 leave office, with an option to reconsider in 50 years (given medical advances). And please let's not let the octagenarian choose. The parties keep me from voting in primaries in the first place because I dare to be independent. Let them exercise their right to choose their nominee.

The problem with last night was, Biden's team needed to prepare him for a PERFORMANCE -- instead, they prepped him to take the SAT. Biden was pumped so full of specific facts and figures that he spit them out like a haywire ticker tape machine. For the love of god, why didn't he have a lozenge, a glass of water, and a cleared throat before taking the stage. 10 seconds in, he looked like he just crawled across the Sahara. Biden needed to paint broad brush strokes on his achievements and then paint every word out of Trump's mouth as a lie. How he let the "Dems are killing babies after they're born" line go uncontested is an absolute crime. But every over the top lie went uncontested, and if you just watched and listened (without processing the words), Biden was feeble, weak and clueless -- Trump was confident, self assured, and powerful as hell. Biden needed a vocal coach to remind him how to project -- and if he had a sore throat, that should have been his FIRST words. "I'm nursing a cold but am COVID negative, so forgive my voice but listen to my words. I'll be back to 100% in a week, but Trump will forever be a danger to our nation." That would have worked wonders. My guess -- he was doped up on cold medication to stop his nose from running and it dried him the hell out. I'm with you. Newsom with either Jeffries or Whitmer would be a good ticket. Harris is a wonderful VP when given freedom to be herself -- to be a woman in the age of Dobbs -- to be a black woman in the age of white nationalism -- to swear and curse and help wake America the F up.

Well said. We need to be honest in our assessment of the situation, but I don’t think Gavin Newsome is a strong national candidate with California way in the red now and with the condition of some of its cities. Let’s take a beat to consider who might be the best candidate. Let’s let our thoughts settle.

Today I'm feeling a bit better, Biden just did what I hoped and admitted he messed up the debate, but is dusting off and coming back blazing. He needs to re-energize the base while the DNC calculates next moves. See TMZ for the clip from his NC rally. Like, where the hell was this Biden last night?

That’s a good question. I don’t think he’s ill given his miraculous recovery and the fact that no one said up front that he was sick. How does he come back blazing in a way that the nation sees. The speech is Raleigh didn’t get an audience like the debate or nationwide attention. The next debate is not until September. Should he do televised interviews? He needs to course correct and fast and visibly if he’s to get to the voters he needs to.

Completely and utterly disagree.

Biden did not have to sing a Puccini aria in the debate, but he did miss a few opportunities to refute Trump’s lies.

Still, being president does not mean he must give answers that take two minutes to formulate on every issue. Being president takes far more than what one narrow and mostly insignificant measure like a sterile presidential “debate” with a cold and a stutter against a lying felon requires.

I’m not hedging his abilities on such a measure. I’m betting on his experience, integrity, affinity for the truth, his sense of respect and decency, and his ability to surround himself with the best people for the jobs that governance requires. Only the short-sided judge him on tonight.

We don’t assess success on one criterion. As president, Biden is thoughtful and considers all the details and evidence. Debates require ultrafast thinking and sometimes reckless pivoting. That’s not something I want in a president anyway. Obama was a great speaker, but Biden has been a far better president even in just his first term than his former boss was in two. And as I recall, Obama tanked on his first debate.

I am appalled at how many are so quick to throw this man under a bus just because of one stupid debate that wasn’t even a debate: Trump lied and bloviated without producing a shred of evidence to back up his claims. Biden never was a strong speaker, so why would we be surprised that he did not exude over-confidence? This debate isn’t a requirement to run the country—sound and solid knowledge and experience are definitely required. Biden more than fits the bill.
