You know I've had a problem with Democrats not being loud enough. Our unifying message should be OBSTRUCT TRUMP, just like when McConnell said the Republicans would be obstructing Obama and wanted to make him a one-term POTUS.

I get what Newsom is doing--it's clickbait for his new podcast, and I'm guessing he's planning a 2028 run. But this isn't the way. If he's going to talk to MAGAts, he should talk to the ones in Congress enabling Trump and Putin. You know how I ask questions, so if Democrats have a problem getting real with these traitors, I'm more than happy to lead a seminar for them

Let's have a conversation about this on your show soon, we haven't talked since you were my final podcast appearance of 2024

Call me insane, but if Gavin Newsome bends a knee after the way Trump talked about California is disgraceful. He will go to whatever extreme to hold a public office. Is the thought of returning to the private sector so horrific you would bow to Trump? Maybe I am missing something, but it appears that newsome will do anything to hold onto a govt. job.

If you’re insane, then I and many others are too. This killed what ever regard I had for Newsom. It’s probably a ploy to get more people on board for a Presidential bid, but I’m not on board with it.

Please ask your self, why would a solid progressive, salt of the earth man of integrity, flip a 180 to accommodate such a criminal conspiracy? Money? No, power? No, these people are wanna be gangster's, extortion or? Do you have kids? They have no regard for anything, only winning, at any cost..

1 fucking guess. Either Newsome was kompromatted or threatened. Or: The fix was in. The unmasking of the attackers. Get used to these betrayals. Believe who people are when they show you the first time. Jamie Raskin keeps touting Steve Bannon too. Adam Kinzinger was shown the Steele Dossier before the 2016 election and so was Paul Ryan. Get your head up. Pick your feet up. And get this foreign invasion gone!

“By 2026, economic populism will be a winning issue”. How I would love to believe this! can you explain how you feel so sure of this? As you say, the legacy media has failed, but it runs on like a headless chicken, spewing inanities. The propaganda media remains strong, disinformation pours in, and Musk is pouring more and more millions in.

Meanwhile Republicans in swing states are working 24/7 to strangle the right to vote. And Republicans in general are still happy with Trump and willing to swallow whatever idiocy he offers them. And the Supreme Court is on the side of the oligarchs.

It will be a winning issue once the Trump clown car eplodes. And that will happen as soon as the first dissater that can (rightly or wrongly) be attributed to one of Trump's ridiculously stupid moves happens. The first natural dissater FEMA can't handle, or the first terrorist attack the FBI or CIA failed to prevent, the first major bank that fails as a result of the Trump recession, will bring it all home for the country and the world.

“Is attributed” is an important phrase here— JD Vance is going everywhere saying they inherited a terrible economy from Joe Biden when they are clearly (for reasons I don’t get) trying to crash it. We have almost no authoritative media—they’re all afraid of offending the cash-bloated right wing.

But I’m praying you’re right. Totally.

Elon Musk is pouring millions into the Supreme Court election in Wisconsin. The (Republican) losing candidate in the NC Supreme Court race is questioning thousands of votes after recount upon recount-- so the Dem hasn't been seated and he will likely take it to SCOTUS. We've all (well all white people) been living in a beautiful world under the rule of law......and it is hanging by a thread.

“By 2026, economic populism modeled after Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren will be a winning issue”

Oh for fuck’s sake. We just had the most leftist president in at least half a century. How’d that work out? 1) the left didn’t give him credit and backstabbed him the entire time showing that they’re in it for performance points and are not serious people, 2) Republicans weaponized these left wing policies effectively, blaming inflation on them and 3) moderate voters fled in droves.

Normal people want lower prices not Elizabeth Warren’s “I have a plan… to run your life for you”. Also calling their proposals “economic populism” is dishonest. It’s just same ol’ regular lefty policies. You can’t take unpopular proposals, call them “populist” and pretend that they’ll magically become popular.

Here’s another hint. When normal people say they don’t like elites, they don’t mean “billionaires”. They mean journalists, college professors, consultants, doctors and lawyers. I.e. people like Elizabeth Warren. You have to be completely out of touch with reality that anything about Warren can be “populist”.

"It’s just same ol’ regular lefty policies."

Yep. Those terrible, terrible lefty policies like "Everyone should be able to afford healthcare.", "Billionaires shouldn't be able to buy elections.", "Citizens shouldn't be blocked from voting.", "Businesses shouldn't be able to abuses their employees."

Gosh, all those would be terrible for people.

Expand full comment
Radek's avatar

Here is the actual “populist” version of everyone of your platitudes. I’m not endorsing them, just translating for you:

“Everyone should be able to afford healthcare” —> “Politicians are making health care expensive and doctors are ripping us off”

“Billionaires shouldnt be able to buy elections” —> “It’s funny to see billionaires put the politicians in their place and besides, they create jobs”

“Citizens shouldnt be blocked from voting” —> “When elections turn out differently than how I voted it’s suspicious and someone should look into that. After all, all my neighbors are with me so there’s no way my side could’ve lost”

“Businesses shouldnt abuse their employees” —> “When Walmart opened a super center my crappy little town finally got a boost and more jobs, which is far more than all the smooth talking liberals have ever done for us”

Again. When you see “anti elitist” you think it means “anti billionaire” but it actually means “anti arrogant self righteous educated folks”. When you see “populist” you think it means “anti business” but it actually means “fuck the politicians and fuck the people who are into politics”

It is hopeless if you don't change your strategy. I would think that losing the presidency and both houses of Congress to a party headed by a sociopath criminal grifter would be enough to convince you of that, but I guess not. Carry on, my dude.

Radek's avatar

Regardless of how you describe these policies, with simplistic and propagandistic platitudes which only accentuate the (potential, only promised and ephemeral) benefits and completely ignore the costs, the point is that this is not how moderate voters perceive them and that they’re not popular and they’re not in any way “populist”

Christopher Foxx's avatar

So rather than address the audience as thinking people we should treat them like morons who don't understand anything?

Grant you, recent elections certainly show there are a lot of idiots out there, but I don't really see adding to the stupidity as a winning strategy.

If you wanted to say the Dems need to be better at communicating, I don't disagree at all. But you're saying the "same ol' regular lefty policies" are unpopular when they aren't. (Time and time again when asked, people like the liberal policies I listed.)

And you're taking what liberals say ("Citizens should not be blocked from voting"), replacing it with what Republicans are saying "(Elections are rigged but only when I lose."), that everyone attributes that Republican thing to liberals. Which, beyond not being true, is actually a criticism of Republicans, not of liberals.

If nothing else, we shouldnt pretend we’re something we’re not. Voters will see through that shit. Point is, the things you mentioned are not “populist” positions.

It all makes perfect sense if you understand that all this is what the billionaires want and their opinions are the only ones that matter. The dems are controlled opposition and just as compromised as the republicans by the rich. There is no liberal party in America. Democrats are the conservatives and the republicans have gone fully fascist.

IF THEY CHOOSE TO DO IT.

Unfortunately, that's a massively big if. It shouldn't be, but Democrats still (Still!) prefer to wimp out than actually stand up for anything.
